Google Launches the +1 Recommendations Button

  • In an effort to make your search results as relevant and efficient as possible, Google has introduced a new technique to help people find the best recommendations in their search results.

After introducing the Google Social Search in 2009, which included more information that people you know share on Twitter, Flickr and other such websites, Google is now taking this approach to the next level, by enabling you and the people you know to share recommendations right in Google’s search results. They simply call it +1. All you have to do is click +1 when you find an ad or webpage that is useful to you and the +1 will then appear next to the search result you’ve marked whenever there is a relevant search on that subject.

For instance, if you’re looking for a lemon bars recipe, you may get a +1 next to a cool cooking website from one of your friends whose cooking you happen to love. Or maybe you want to buy a new dress and you find a +1 from one of your fashion victim friends.

The most important advantage to +1 recommendations is their relevance, because they come from people who matter to you, whenever and wherever you need them.

If you’re wondering how Google knows which +1’s to show you, there are different signals used, such as people you are already connected to through Google, like chat buddies and contacts. Other signals such as your connections on sites like Twitter might also be incorporated in the future to make sure they keep your recommendations as relevant as possible.

You will need a Google profile in order to start marking the stuff that’s important to you with +1’s, or upgrade your profile if you already have one. If you want to see your +1’s or delete the ones you no longer like, you can do that from your profile. Don’t forget to log into your Google Account in order to see your +1’s in your Google search results. Also, if you would like to see who you’re connected to, and how, you should visit the “Social Circle and Content” section of the Google Dashboard.

+1’s will start rolling out in English on Google.com. If you’re impatient and you want to see +1’s as soon as possible, you have the possibility to opt-in to the launch by visiting Google’s experimental search site at http://www.google.com/experimental/index.html. If you’re an advertiser and want to find out more about how the +1 button works on search ads and websites, please visit Google’s AdWords blog at http://adwords.blogspot.com/2011/03/1-button-adwords.html.
